Jordan Poll Hereford Stud was established in 1980 by Helen White. Helen ran the stud on the family farm at Melton Mowbray, in Tasmania's Southern Midlands. The bloodlines of the stud at that time consisted of Ridgeside (from Evandale, Tasmania), Martin (from Devonport, Tasmania), Deepfield (from Victoria), and Valmont (from Whitemore, Tasmania). For some time JPHS went into recession before, in 2001, the family purchased two cows with calves at foot and one heifer from the annual Valma Stud sale at Whitemore. In 2002 Helen’s brother Chris, his wife Debbielee, and their two daughters Annika and Andrea reopened the stud. The family began with cattle the family had purchased from the Valma Stud in 2001. The White's soon adapted to the cattle lifestyle. Because Debbielee had already established Orabanda Arabian Stud and her children were starting to compete in equestrian events, she found it difficult to put 110% into both studs. Because of this Debbielee sent a bull calf that they had purchased from Valma Stud (in 2001) to June and John Pilch’s property at Bothwell in order to prepare him for the show season. A couple of months after this Debbielee brought a heifer in and halter broke it, finding the exercise quite easy and enjoyable. In 2003 the White's decided to expand the stud and so went to the Granary Dispersal Sale, where they bought nine cows and two cows. A fortnight later the White's travelled to Western Australia for the Jenora Dispersal Sale where they met the principle Clem Keeffe; a man they found to be "as honest as his handshake, a walking encyclopedia of the Poll Hereford breed, and a true old gentlemen". At Jenora the White's purchased six cows, two calves, and one bull to add to their growing stud stock. The cattle arrived in Tasmania in late October 2003. Ten days after their arrival 'Jenora Chrissima' (and her calf 'Jenora Yelta') was washed and scrubbed and taken to the local agricultural show at Brighton, where she was awarded Grand Champion Cow of the Day. Prior to this 'Jenora Chrissma' had won Champion Junior Heifer at Perth Royal Show (1999) as a junior. In May 2004 the White's brought cattle from the 'Good As Gold' sale in N.S.W (six cows and four calves). At this stage Jordon Poll Hereford Stud had increased considerably and Debbielee was finding it ever harder to run both studs (JPHS & Orabanda Arabians) and the family home, so decided to take on an apprentice. In June 2004 a quick decision was made to go to Dubbo to purchase another stud bull. The White's chose lot number 13, Allendale Rosemount (2) to be the stud's leading sire. During the winter months JPHS started preparing their 2004 and early 2005 show team. The season proved successful with highlights including: Scottsdale Agricultural Show :: 12-13/11/2004 Wynyard Agricultural Show :: 13/03/2005 Hamilton Agricultural Show :: 27/03/2005 |
